Black Girls Dive
Photographing Black Girls Dive in Andros was one of the most powerful assignments I’ve ever taken on—both visually and personally. As someone who had never sub dove before, I stepped into this experience with a mix of excitement and unease. But waking up before sunrise to watch a group of 13-16 year-old Black girls from places like Baltimore and Atlanta fearlessly descend into the depths of the ocean shattered any apprehension I had. It wasn’t just about capturing images; it was about witnessing the power of possibility. Standing on this island, knowing that centuries ago Black people arrived here in chains, and now seeing these young women dive freely into the vast blue, exploring a world many never get to touch—it felt like history being rewritten. Each frame I captured told a story of resilience, curiosity, and an unbreakable bond between these girls and the sea. It reminded me that the camera isn't just a tool for documentation—it’s a way to amplify the voices of those redefining narratives, one dive at a time.
